The Path to a Community-Owned Internet

Decentralized L2 and L3 rollups are how Ethereum scales and builds a community-owned internet. But it won’t happen on its own. Recentralization over the years has put web3’s original promise of a truly open, fair, and user-owned internet at risk.

As such, Metabased is launching this fellowship program for researchers and developers to help solve this problem by inventing new economic mechanisms that will make community-owned rollups at scale possible. Selected fellows will join the Metabased community of 20+ leading organizations actively building in this area including Syndicate, Alchemy, Optimism, Unite, Fractal, Eco, and more.

Fellowship Details

Goals

• Research and develop new economic mechanisms that enable community-owned metabased L2/L3 rollups at scale
• Create a community of top mechanism researchers and designers to help leading L2/L3s launch, decentralize, align stakeholders, and succeed long-term

Activities

• Research and co-development of mechanism designs for metabased L2/L3s to incentivize, align, and empower their communities
• Writing, publishing, and sharing of economic mechanism research and designs
• There will be a weekly check-in call for the fellows, as well as a monthly share-out call to the Metabased community. Fellows will publish their latest work every other week

Details and Timing

• The Metabased Fellowship will last 8 weeks. There will be two initial cohorts.
• The first cohort will start October 21 and end December 13.

Second Cohort

The second cohort will be selected through a buildathon hosted by Metabased and Syndicate at Edge City Lanna in Thailand the week of November 3-10 and start sometime shortly after.
